FUE micrograft in eyebrow reconstruction

Eyebrow hair reconstruction is a technique that should be adapted to each patient's particular circumstances.

The eyebrow region has thick and delicate hairs, with a limited length. It is located above the eye and follows the inside margin of the frontal bone.

Its main function is to protect the eye from humidity but eyebrows also play an important role in human communication and can transmitting surprise, anger or astonishment.

Eyebrows influence the sensation of facial symmetry as well as the perception of a person's face. Therefore, people without eyebrows or scars and bald areas can feel aesthetically conditioned.

Why does eyebrow hair fall out?

Loss of eyebrow hair stems from different causes:

  • Thermal or chemical trauma, such as electrical burns or traffic accidents.
  • Systematic or localised diseases.
  • Mechanical hair removal.
  • Medication or therapies such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

Which techniques are available for eyebrow reconstruction?

Eyebrows can be reconstructed in a variety of ways. One of the simplest is hair graft with the FUE technique, which has better results in the long term than other techniques.

Eyebrow reconstruction can be total or partial:

  • Partial reconstruction: regrowth on a scar in the eyebrow region.
  • Total reconstruction: when all the hair on the eyebrow needs to be regrown.

Partial reconstruction of eyebrows

To regrow part of an eyebrow, a delicate and meticulous extraction of follicular units is carried out on the opposite eyebrow, choosing from different areas so the donor eyebrow is not affected by hairless areas. The extracted follicles are grafted into the eyebrow following the angle of the brow growth. This implies that the orifices where the grafts are placed should be exceptionally oblique (virtually parallel to the skin) and they should follow the direction of growth of the other brow hairs.

The direction in which the eyebrow hair grows is not identical for all the hairs. The medial region of the brow should have the grafts placed towards the higher part of the nose because they emerge almost vertically. The side area of the eyebrow has hair in two directions, the portion closest to the eyelid have the hairs facing upwards and towards the temporal region. The top side has hair emerging downwards and out.

It is essential to imitate the different hair orientations on the brow for a natural result. Correctly placed incisions for the graft placing with determine the proper growth direction of the grafted hair.

Total reconstruction of eyebrows

If the patient has no eyebrows at all, the donor site for grafting is the lower occipital region (the back of the head). An area where hair tends to spontaneously be finer and shorter. The hair on this area is very similar to eyebrow hair.

In this case, it is important to speak to the patient to ascertain the shape, density and direction of the brows; their height and thickness should also de agreed on, as they will affect the final result.
