Doctor Perez Sevilla, at the SECOM Facial Aesthetics Course

Dr. Gema Perez Sevilla, Maxillofacial Surgeon and Head of the Facial Aesthetic Medicine Unit at IML, participated as SECOM Coordinator at the Facial Aesthetics course held in Madrid on 31st October 2012.

Poor dental occlusion, which is suffered by one in five people, involves a greater risk of facial asymmetry, according to the conclusions of the course on Facial Aesthetics organised by the Spanish Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (SECOM). For its coordinator, Doctor Gema Perez Sevilla of the Instituto Medico Laser, improvement in facial harmony is achieved through oral and maxillofacial surgery, for malocclusion as well as other facial deformities, "is incomparable to any other intervention, since both soft tissue and bones are worked on".

Work on the whole of the anatomical structures of the face performed by the oral and maxillofacial surgeon "allows for optimum changes in facial aesthetics", as emphasised by Doctor Perez Sevilla. In her opinion, "its important to be familiar with the techniques, from the less invasive to those that require surgery, to apply the most suitable one in each case, correcting defects both on the surface as well as in the facial volumes". Furthermore, "the thorough knowledge of facial anatomy of the maxillofacial surgeon achieves greater precision on the treated tissues when applying the anesthesia, which increases the effectiveness and reduces the risk of adverse effects".
