Hypertrophic scars and keloids are characterized by wide scars, redness and greater relief than the rest of the skin and, in many instances, produce itchiness.
The treatment with the new laser V Beam can remove a scar of this type in 1-3 sessions, while it is also interesting to combine this treatment with adhesive silicone sheets and also in some cases with infiltration into the scar.
In the cases in which a scar also has a loss of tissue, you can complement the treatment with an injectable non-reabsorbable filling material.
Laser treatment have made some 80% of scars disappear
New applications of Vasculight Laser have made some 80% of keloids and hypertrophic scars disappear.
According to the most recent medical studies it is calculated that between 11 and 16% of the population has a scar on their body fundamentally provoked by surgical operations, surgeries, trauma, or accidents. Sometimes these scars are in visible areas and patients worry more about their removal, but they are always unwanted for those who have them.
“There are various types of scars”, explains Javier Moreno, director of the Instituto Médico Láser, “normal scars are flat and white. Hypertrophic scars are characterized for being red, hard, and producing itchiness, but remain within the limits of surgical wound and keloid scars have the same characteristics, but grow to exceed the limits of a skin wound”.
Normal scars were, until now, the easiest to remove: the combination of erbium lasers and the CO2 laser permitted the “sanding down” of the scar to leave it at the level of the rest of the skin, thus getting satisfactory medical results.
"The big problem for us resided in the treatment of the anomaly scars – keloid scars and hypertrophic scars – of which the method of removal (steroid infiltration, cryosurgery, radiotherapy) did not offer convincing results".
The recent use of the Vasculight PL-Photoderm laser has demonstrated for the first time the effectiveness of this type of treatment for these scars, improving the clinical appearance (colour and size), texture, flexibility of the skin and reducing itchiness. “With this Vasculight-Photoderm treatment, the hypertrophic scars demonstrate an average improvement of greater than 80%”, stated Javier Moreno of IML.
Keloid scars, and especially fibrous ones, require a greater number of sessions and are done every 6-8 weeks to adapt the time of resting the tissue to the different amounts of exposure to the laser.
The treatment is not painful and does not need anaesthesia. It is useful to apply hydrating ointments and it is very important to have protection against sun exposure.
