IML Hands Repair

The hands, indisputable instruments of communication and closeness to others, are involved in nearly everything we do and are always exposed to the outside.

Our aesthetic concerns are always focused on the facial ageing, but the reality is that the hands age much earlier, they reveal our profession, our hobbies and even can reveal our personality.

The skin on the back of the hands presents an extremely thin dermis that holds very little water. Its sebaceous glands are scant and virtually devoid of adipose tissue, so that it is barely protected against mechanical aggressions.

These inherent characteristics of the skin and the fact that are involved in nearly everything we do and are always exposed to the outside, make the hands suffer more damage than other area of the body.

The various aesthetic problems of the hands and their treatments are the following:

Cracked Hands

The skin on the hands have a huge tendency to dehydration, which we can deal with on two levels:

  1. Protection and moisturising on an epidermal level, applying topical products that provide moisturising substances such as glycerine, sorbitol, petroleum jelly or paraffins with wetting capacity, so that the skin is protected from external aggressions and its acid mantle hydrolipid capacity is improved.
  2. Moisturising on a dermal level. The barrier function of the epidermis is affected and therefore the hands become dehydrated. To provide deep moisturising, at IML we apply intradermal mesotherapy with Low Trabeculate Hyaluronic Acid.

With the aid of a pneumatic precision gun, we infiltrate small deposits of low trabeculate hyaluronic acid into the reticular dermis or deep dermis. The hyaluronic acid behaves like a sponge with water, because each molecule retains 1,000 times its weight in water.

Spots on Hands

Age spots appear on the skin of the hands when they have exhausted their solar capital, so the existence of solar lentigines on the hands is an important marker of cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Prevention is just as important as elimination in treating hand blemishes:

  1. For elimination, IML uses two devices ideal for this type of treatment: Q-switched Alexandrite Laser and Neodymium:Yag+KTP Laser. The IML physician will employ one or the other depending on the size and depth of each patient's lesions.
  2. For prevention, we recommend application of an Ultra sunscreen (SPF 50), especially if sport or activities are performed outdoors, such as golf or windsurfing.

Bony Hands

The thinning of the tissue that holds the skin to the back of the hands gives the impression of early ageing, since this hypodermal refining emphasizes the tendons and veins on the skin.

The treatment used at the IML is Subdermal Filler with Polylactic Acid. The polylactic acid is infiltrated with a specifically designed technique that doubles the usual dissolution level of the product. This increase in the dissolution of the product ensures its better distribution and a more homogeneous end result.

The infiltration is performed with cream anaesthetic in one session, followed by a deep digital massage.

If the patient presents all three problems, the overhaul of the hands includes the treatments designed for each condition and can be performed in a single visit, in a 50 minute session, and after this the patient can resume their social and work activity immediately, since it requires no recovery time.
