Laser Blepharoplasty: eliminates eyelid bags

What is Laser Blepharoplasty?

A minimally invasive surgical procedure that eliminates the fat deposits and excess skin in the periocular region, obtaining complete rejuvenation of the eye area. It prevents the look and feel of tiredness, sad and lacklustre eyes.

Laser blepharoplasty is a minimally invasive technique that eliminates the fat deposits and excess skin surrounding the eyes.

What does laser blepharoplasty involve?

The technique can be performed on both the top and bottom eyelids, according to need. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic with no discomfort to the patient.

Top eyelid procedure

  1. The area of skin to be resected is marked and the deposits located, with the patient standing and with no palpebral fissure.
  2. Protective titanium contact lenses are placed in the eye to isolate the eyeball from the rest of the area to be treated.
  3. Local anaesthetic is injected into the skin (lidocaine-adrenaline).
  4. The excess skin is removed and excess muscle is contracted with laser, instead of resecting as in traditional blepharoplasty. Fat is then extracted via a minimal laser incision that does not require muscular suturing.
  5. The top skin wound is closed with an extremely fine, invisible suture that is removed within 5 days.

Bottom eyelid procedure

  1. The deposits are marked.
  2. Protective contact lenses are placed in the eye to isolate the eyeball from the rest of the area to be treated.
  3. Local anaesthetic is injected into the skin (lidocaine-adrenaline).
  4. An incision of a few millimetres is made through the conjunctiva, accessing the retromuscular compartment where the deposits are and these are drained. No stitching required.
  5. The FX ACTIVE laser is swept over the lower eyelid skin the obtain an effective and safe effacement.
  6. Plasma-rich growth factors are currently added to accelerate internal and skin recovery.

Advantages of Laser blepharoplasty over conventional techniques

  1. A more natural correction of the upper eyelid, avoiding the scarring of the eyebrow required with an orbicular muscle incision, as well as no scarring in the lower eyelid.
  2. Extremely natural correction of the excesses and defects in the skin surrounding the eyes. Since the lower eyelid is not resected, avoiding "Scleral-Show" (rounded eye with exposed sclera where the white fibrous membrane under the iris is visible). Better correction of crow's feet skin and periorbital defects (there are no limitations as with traditional surgical approach).
  3. Allows for plasty (correction) of periorbitals that are too thick and prominent without slicing. There is no resection of the orbicular muscle, and therefore does not affect the natural look of the eyelid.
  4. Patients with lax lower eyelids or severe myopia where conventional surgery is not possible can now operated on with this method.
  5. Less recovery and convalescence period, especially in the case of the lower eyelid (5 to 8 days for the top and 4 to 5 for the bottom)
  6. Reduced risk of potential complications associated with eyelid surgery:
  • Reduced risk of bleeding and bruising and therefore fewer complications derived from these (poor scar formation, lesions to the eyeball vessels and nerves).
  • Reduced risk of poor scarring with visible sequela (extremely important in darker skins that heal poorly). Less risk of ectropion (unnatural inversion of the eyelid, exposing the whites of the eye and post-surgical roundness).
  • Reduced risk of damage to the periocular region’s skin, muscles and septum.
  • Possibility of simple relocation of fat to sunken areas.

Drawbacks (relative) of Laser blepharoplasty over conventional techniques

  1. More difficult surgical technique.
  2. The patient should not exposed the eyelid to direct sunlight without adequate protection (sun block or glasses) for 3 to 6 months, at physician’s discretion. For the first few days and depending on the seriousness of the condition, the lower eyelid will be red. The redness can be camouflaged with make-up after five or six days.
  3. Patients with severe excess skin on the lower eyelid cannot undergo this technique.
  4. High cost of the equipment.
